Balancing Rest and Responsibility
Where did I feel resistance?

A family member needed help this week on my Sabbath so I dropped my plans to help.  I’m reminded of Jesus saying that the “Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath,” and that there are times when you take care of needs and avoid the legalistic practice of Sabbath.  Mark 2:27, Luke 13: 15, Luke 14:5.

Where did I feel delight?

Knowing that God is our provider and that in all things we are called to trust in Him, I delight.  We do not have to be slaves for money.  While money enables us to fulfill our desires, it’s Jesus who is our ultimate provider and only in Him are we fulfilled.  John 4:13-14.

Where did I most experience God’s nearness?

God’s living word.  We don’t place legalistic following of the word over relationship with people. i.e., “love your neighbor as yourself.”  We apply the word of God in our lives and in our relationships with others.  I believe that when it says in Ephesians 1: 18 “the eyes of your heart,” I believe this is the ability to see the world around us with God’s heart.  Our goal isn’t to achieve comfort physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Rather, our calling is outward and always in relationship with God and with others.  THIS is how we draw near to Him.
