Rejection Is Redirection: Trusting God with Your Story

Kimi’s journey could be summarized in one phrase: “Rejection is really redirection.”

Her story begins with what felt like heartbreak—a long-awaited Christmas Day performance at the Vatican was suddenly canceled. For a young musician, it was devastating. But what seemed like loss soon became a turning point. The unused flight credit opened the door to her first mission trip to Mentasta, Alaska, where she experienced the beauty, faith, and hospitality of an indigenous community. That experience didn’t just change her—it changed her family. They later returned together to serve and build relationships in that same village.

The leftover travel funds took her on another unexpected path—visiting relatives in Florida and Las Vegas, which sparked her love for travel. That passion eventually led her to a 9-month study abroad program in Italy as a high school junior. Looking back, she realized something extraordinary: she ended up seeing everything that had been on that canceled Rome itinerary, and so much more.

Then came another wave of rejection—college applications. Out of ten schools, she received five rejections and two acceptances: University of Hawai‘i and Bryn Mawr College. Unsure but willing, she took the leap of faith and moved to Pennsylvania. She later described the college application process as “putting your soul out there,” and every “no” felt personal. But through that season of waiting and disappointment, she learned something priceless—her worth wasn’t determined by acceptance letters. God was forming her identity and resilience.

Today, Kimi works as an Admissions Officer at Bryn Mawr, walking alongside students in the same vulnerable season she once knew so well. She helps them see beyond rejection—to recognize that God’s plans often unfold through detours. What once hurt now serves as her ministry. Her story has come full circle: what was once rejection became redirection, woven with grace and purpose.

Reflecting on her twenties, Kimi calls it a season of discovery—a time to unlearn people-pleasing and release the pressure of living up to expectations. Instead of chasing status or success, she now chooses joy, love, and meaningful community. Her insight is both profound and pastoral:

“Students want to feel seen and heard, find their people, and also be challenged…they want to be reminded why it all matters.”

Her words echo a truth that transcends age—every heart longs for belonging and purpose.

Kimi’s story also highlights the lasting impact of community. Growing up in a youth group that encouraged questions, dialogue, and authenticity gave her a foundation to build upon. It taught her that faith isn’t handed down—it’s formed through relationship, curiosity, and conviction.

Now, wherever she goes, Kimi carries that same spirit forward—helping others discover that even when plans fall apart, God is still writing a better story.
