Eliminating Hypocrisy
““when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

Matthew 6:3, NIV

“when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen..”

Matthew 6:6, NIV

“when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting.”

Matthew 6:16, NIV

In Week 5 of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the issue of hypocrisy that can sometimes arise within the Church. He provides three examples: drawing attention to one’s giving to the needy, praying in a way that seeks the admiration of others, and fasting in a manner that invites public recognition. These behaviors highlight a common human tendency—to seek approval and acceptance from others.

However, Jesus reminds us that true righteousness is meant for an audience of one: God alone. When we act with the intent of gaining human recognition, our reward will come only from people, which pales in comparison to the far greater reward that comes from God.
