Matthew 7: 12, NIV
In Week 8 of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7: 1-12) Jesus begins this part of his teaching concerning our relationships with others. Here’s what he says:
Do not judge. Instead, whenever we feel like judging someone else, use it as an opportunity to reflect on your own shortcomings. (Matthew 7: 1-5)
Ask for discernment and wisdom when to give wisdom. Knowing how and when to give wisdom is important if it is to be received. (Matthew 7: 6-11)
To practice the Golden Rule, treating others as yourself, start with empathy. (Matthew 7: 12)
For me, what Jesus is saying about how we are relate to others starts with empathy. It seems simple enough, but why doesn’t this come naturally to us? We’re quick to judge, quick to provide our thoughts on how someone else should behave, and we think of ourselves first. Maybe when we think and behave counter-culturally as Jesus teaches us, then we truly start to become His disciples and take our part in uniting heaven and earth.
