Reflecting on the broader message of this series, I landed on it being about the moral formation of our “heart.” When we say the shema to love the LORD your God with all your “heart” (Deuteronomy 6: 5) or read that King David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14), we acknowledge that the condition of our “heart” is a critical calling from God. The Greek word is kardia which means the physical organ in our body and in the Bible is used figuratively for the place from which springs our thoughts, emotions, and actions. For while we have heard that obedience to God should be our life’s goal, obedience without the right “heart” is empty legalism. When we adopt the spiritual practices of Jesus that we’ve reviewed to-date — Sabbath, Solitude, Prayer, and Fasting – we must practice these with the right “heart,” rather than as a legalistic set of “to-dos.” Formation of our “heart” then is what this series is about. It’s the perfect complement to the practices we’ve covered to-date and I believe it’s God’s perfect timing in our spiritual and moral formation as Christ followers.
