Giving
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Acts 20: 35, NLT

“The Generosity Practice is orienting our hearts to the abundance mentality of Jesus.
The Greek word for “blessed” is makarios which means happy. Translating the meaning behind Acts 20: 35 when Jesus was quoted as saying, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” means that youʻre happier giving than receiving.

As with so many truths in the Bible, Science is just catching up, empirically. A 2008 study by Dunn, Aknin & Norton concluded that spending money on others produces happiness. A 2013 study by Aknin and a 2016 study by Whillans concluded that spending on others improves well-being. While at first, spending on others instead of ourselves might at first sound counter-intuitive, itʻs a part of human nature. These empirical studies controlled for country, demographics, income levels, individualist or collectivistic culture, and wealth of country, and still found that humans behave and react the same regarding this principle of being happier when giving than receiving.

Jesus, once again, is the ultimate teacher. The Jewish figure of speech for “generosity” is a “healthy eye” and the opposite or “stingy” is “unhealthy eye.” This is about your worldview being a window to your soul. When you have a “healthy eye” you view the world with abundance and trust that God always provides. When you have an “unhealthy eye” you view the world with scarcity and fear that greed is warranted. This is why Generosity is a Spiritual Practice, an intentional way to make more room for the Holy Spirit to transform us from within into people who become more like Jesus.
Letʻs begin by being people who have a “giving” mindset towards a healthier worldview.”
