“The Generosity Practice is orienting our hearts to the abundance mentality of Jesus.
The greed in all of us is why we need the Spiritual Practice of Generosity. Jesus warns us of this in Luke 10:15. Often times the rationale for accumulating money for ourselves (greed) is driven by worries, lure of a better life, or the desire for more material things. However, this rationale for accumulating money leads to the exact opposite—more worry, less contentment, and insatiable desires. Jesus elaborates on this in the Parable of the Sower in Mark 4: 1-20.
Financial success is an obstacle to Spiritual Formation, the process of becoming more like Jesus. The Spiritual Practice of Generosity sows contentment in us. This divine contentment enables us to live out whatʻs said in Hebrews 13:5:
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Generosity fosters the “abundance mindset” which sows content because we can trust in God to provide us everything that we need.
In closing, I love this quote from Practicing the Way, “There are two ways to be rich; earn more or want less.”
This is a statement about being richly content by living a simple, minimalist lifestyle. Like your time to be interruptible to Serve, you need margin in your finances in order to be more Generous.”
