Love is the Why
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10: 45, NLT
“We define The Service Practice as the expression of Christlike love through meeting the practical needs of others.

At the heart of the Greatest Commandment and all of these spiritual disciplines or Practices of Jesus is love.

Love for God. Love for Others.

Acts of service are acts that must be rooted in love. Not: Obligation, Duty, or Just to “Help Out.” It’s an Other-first orientation. DENYING SELF at its core. The process of spiritual formation is the transformation happening inside of you to become a person of LOVE so that you can LOVE others.

In Mark 10: 45, NLT “For even the Son of Man came not to be served by to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” We acknowledge that Jesus came not to be served but to serve others. Jesus modeled the importance of Service to Others as what it means to become like Him.

The Service Practice that we’ embarking upon today has four aspects: Love, Everyday, Interruptible, and Hanai.

All of these components of Service are aimed to grow in us to become people of Christlike love. In this way, our spiritual formation is a God-designed and led one. Spiritual Formation is not for us personally to achieve some higher spiritual maturity and consciousness; it’s to extend God’s love through us to Others. We must become people of LOVE through and through.

Love is the Why of acts of Service.

Practicing the Way of Jesus is about allowing you to receive God’s never-ending love for you so that as you serve Others they might experience that same love.

Jesus said in John 13: 34, NLT:

“Love each other.

Just as I have loved you,

You should love each other.”

This is exactly what the Practice of Service looks like lived out—a love that moves from words to action. As we step into November 2025, the timing of this Practice feels especially significant.”
