Michelle’s story is about trust and rhythm. Through the practice of Sabbath, she learned that surrendering time to God doesn’t lead to loss—it opens the way to rest, renewal, and unexpected blessing.

The Gift of Rest: How Sabbath Transformed My Life

For Michelle, one verse has quietly guided her life: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). She came to realize that “treasure” isn’t just money—it’s time. How we spend our hours reveals what truly matters to us.

More than twelve years ago, Michelle decided to start giving one day each week wholly to God. It began as an act of obedience—something she knew Scripture encouraged, but that felt almost impossible in practice. At the time, she was in Architecture school, a program notorious for sleepless nights and endless deadlines. The idea of taking a full day off each week felt reckless, even irresponsible. What if she fell behind? What if she failed?

Yet, something deeper in her heart whispered that rest was not a distraction from her work—it was an invitation to trust.

So she began. From Sunday midnight to Monday midnight, Michelle set aside time for worship, Scripture, and quiet. She treated it not as an escape, but as sacred space—a way to realign her heart and remember who she was and whose she was. It wasn’t easy. At first, Sabbath felt awkward and countercultural. But over time, something changed.

What began as a discipline became a delight. As she faithfully practiced this weekly rhythm, the anxiety that once consumed her began to fade. Her focus sharpened, her creativity deepened, and her spirit found rest. Eventually, Sabbath became so natural that she described it as being “as normal as brushing your teeth.”

The results were remarkable. Of the 110 students who began her architecture program, only 25 finished within seven years. Michelle was one of them. Looking back, she sees a clear connection between that outcome and her commitment to Sabbath. Setting aside time for God didn’t hinder her success—it sustained it. It was as if God multiplied what she had left, blessing her obedience with clarity, endurance, and peace.

Today, the Sabbath continues to shape Michelle’s life. It’s more than a habit—it’s a way of being. It’s her reminder that God is not only present in the workweek, but also in the stillness. By trusting Him with her time, she’s discovered the beauty of spiritual formation through surrender.

Her story offers a powerful truth for all of us: when we entrust our schedules, ambitions, and energy to God, He transforms rest into strength and scarcity into abundance. The practice of Sabbath isn’t just about stopping work—it’s about making space for grace.
