Talking With God
“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’”
Luke 11: 11-13, NIV
Immediately following the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11: 2-4 which is Jesus’ response to his disciples’ request to teach them to pray, Jesus draws attention through a rabbinic form of teaching called “how much more.” I’ll summarize by key take away about Jesus’ teaching of prayer this way: be bold and persistent. When we talk with God through prayer, it’s an opportunity to express it all to Him: gratitude, lament, petition and intercession.
If the practice of Prayer is a time to communicate and commune with God, then let’s do so with boldness and persistence. See also 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18.
