Who Is God?

Exploring the nature of the One behind all things.

by Pastor David Oyadomari

Question

Who is God?

Reflection

Throughout history, people have tried to describe God with words, symbols, and stories, each being a window into something infinite and significant. Some see God as Creator, others as Energy, Spirit, or Love itself. Regardless of these different names and images, behind every title assigned to God is the same longing we humans have: to understand the One who gives life meaning and shape.

If the universe shows signs of intention and design — if beauty, order, and consciousness are not random — then perhaps God is the Mind and Heart behind it all, the Source from which everything good, true, and beautiful flows.

In the Christian tradition, God is both beyond and near. He is infinite yet personal, powerful yet present. Not an abstract force, but a Being who knows, loves, and desires to be known.
Jesus described God not as distant, but as Father — relational, compassionate, and attentive. He showed that to know God is not merely to know about God, but to experience His presence through love, forgiveness, and purpose.

While there are many facets to God, it is a challenge to definitively assign a definition to who He is. Every description about God’s identity cannot be taken as a stand-alone definition, as our experiences of love, beauty, truth, and grace all whisper something of God’s character.
Where there is light, there is a reflection of His goodness. Where there is mercy, there is a trace of His heart. Where there is awe, there is an echo of His presence.

Asking who God is is not only a question of finality and title, but moreso, it is the significant beginning and origins of our relational journey between the Creator and us.

Takeaway

Whether you begin with curiosity, doubt, or faith, the search for God is ultimately the search for the One who already knows and loves you. God is not an idea to solve, but a presence to encounter. The question “Who is God?” might just lead to a deeper wondering — Who am I, in light of God’s love?
