Best in People
“My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?”
James 2: 1-4, NIV
This week we walk downhill (yay!) from O’Cebreiro to Triacastela. It is here that we read James 2: 1-13.
Do not show favoritism. (v. 1-4)
Favoritism is another form of bondage. (v. 5-7)
Mercy triumphs judgement. (v. 8-13)
As Jesus does for us, one way to love our neighbor is to find what’s best in people and to help them find it for themselves. When we show special favor to those with status while keeping those without status oppressed “in the system,” we are not reflecting the dignity and equality that exists in the Kingdom of Heaven. By changing the standard behaviors of our culture, we can bring the Kingdom of Heaven near to earth.
