Reflection Sunday

As we arrive at Reflection Week in our Solitude Practice, I want to share a quote from Trevor Hudson, spiritual formation pastor, Fuller Seminary professor, and author.

God

In this remarkable passage you see that Jesus got up before dawn and before anyone else was awake to be in solitude with God the Father. Jesus was in such a remote location that His disciples had to look for him and when they find him what Jesus says to them is something that requires pause and reflection on what happens when you enter solitude to commune with God.

Most people are uncomfortable being alone with their thoughts. In fact, studies have shown that many would rather experience negative stimulation—even something as extreme as an electric shock—than sit in silence with no distractions.

Coming fresh off a full day of healing many who were sick and driving out many demons Jesus got up early the next morning to pray in a solitary place (Greek word: eremos). Jesus modeled the spiritual discipline of Solitude.

In Week 3 of The Solitude Practice we take hold of Matthew 4: 1-11 in a new light: the eremos (quiet place) where Jesus often spent time in solitude is a place of strength, not weakness.

In Week 2 of The Solitude Practice we are focusing on how to manage common feelings of pain (exhaustion, worry, sadness, anger, shame, to name a few) that often bubbles up in us in the quiet.

This week we begin The Solitude Practice through June 9th. I’m very excited about this because it dovetails so well with The Sabbath Practice that we just went through.
