Reflections
Holding the Spirit of Sabbath
I started Sabbath 2 hours late this week as I like to finish as many tasks as possible before the Sabbath. I extend 2 hours on the back-end though.
Finding Rest Despite Change
I was tempted to move my Sabbath day this week to accommodate the Labor Day holiday, to spend more time with Joshua
Choosing Devotion Over Rest
I felt really tired this week. In times of weariness, I’ve learned to press-in more intentionally to spend time with the LORD.
Easing Into Spiritual Practices
Remarkably, the resistance to Sabbath, Solitude, Prayer, and Fasting has been less and less as these practices work into my weekly routine.
Finding Sabbath in New Places
This week I was in California moving my son Joshua into college. The “resistance” I felt is the break in my routine of sitting in my favorite spot in my backyard.
A Mixed Bag of Emotions
This week there was a lot going on in preparation for our impending trip to move Joshua into college. I started my sabbath six hours later than usual.
Intent Over Effort
This week’s Fasting took place on Thursday and independently from Tammi and Joshua who did their fast on Wednesday and Tuesday, respectively.
The Roommate Prayer
Tammi, Josh and I practiced Fasting from sunrise to sundown on Thursday. On Tuesday and Wednesday evening/early morning the following day.
Hard Limits, High Rewards
I’ve been practicing taking the Sabbath now for about four months and am starting to understand why the Pharisees might’ve been so legalistic about it; it’s really hard
From Relish to Resolve
I tried to practice St. Ignatius of Loyola’s “Examen” which is a five-step daily prayer (memorized by the 5 R’s)
The Sabbath Routine
First Sabbath day back from our Japan trip and I felt out-of-sync. My rhythm was broken. My typical week starting on Sunday looks something like this.
Falling Behind Schedule
My Sabbath started late again, at 5:30pm, two and a half hours past my targeted 3:00pm. Once this happened, I also knew that I had planned to help make okoshi
Sabbath in the Storm
It’s a busy time of year as the school year draws to a close. There are a lot of events and activities throughout the week.
Clearing the Calendar
Once again, I faced the reality that the rest of the world does NOT practice the Sabbath, especially when I do. There were events that took place as the academic year
An Ox in the Well
Well, our refrigerator compressor went out Tuesday morning during my Sabbath. I spent the day emptying our freezer and refrigerator and trying to find a refrigerator
The World Doesn’t Stop
The world does not stop at Monday, 3pm. Right before 3pm I received a call from the bank that required me to take care of something, so I did. I then picked up Josh
The Unfinished List
Within an hour into my Sabbath this week my mind thought of two tasks that I didn’t write down so I had to find a piece of paper so that I wouldn’t forget it.
The Weight of Guilt
Let’s start with a prior commitment that conflicted with my Sabbath. I had a 10 o’clock meeting scheduled months earlier. Should I honor this commitment
The Anxiety of Doing Nothing
There were so many things outside of my control getting ready last week Monday for the clock to strike 3 o’clock to begin my Sabbath. I ended up starting my Sabbath
Mindset over Milestones
My body rhythm was all thrown off by trying to sleep 8 hours a day. I got up earlier than I had planned. I got up in the middle of the night, multiple times.
Light in the Darkness
Pastor Chelsey Villamin organized an absolutely beautiful service for keiki who knew the Oda family children. In Chelsey’s words
More Lawn Mower Sharing
I hope to see you this Friday at First Assembly of God on Red Hill (above Kaiser Hospital in Moanalua) at 4:00pm or 6:00pm. Over 30 churches, including KCF
Beyond Church Walls
This week is not so much a reading as much as a reflecting on how amazing it has been to see different churches gather together in unity. Most of you have heard about C4’s
